By was of introducing myself to the group, I'll give a little history of my limited experience with silver.

I am one of the fortunate ones who inherited a lot of old and beautiful china and silver from past generations, and for a number of years, I didn't see the need to buy anything new. The silver was typical of the 20th-century American middle class: lots of Alvin and Reed & Barton, flatware and serving pieces, mostly sterling. I had plenty for entertaining, and that was that.

But over the last few years, the silver bug has bitten me, and I've acquired a number of nice, new-to-me pieces. Somewhat by accident, I've become a bit of a Gorham collector. I have a couple of tea sets and a couple of after-dinner coffee sets with trays, and several serving dishes, including a couple of stunning covered tureens. And my other half has been amassing a fairly full set of 'Buttercup' flatware. We also have some 'King George', but I'm probably going to go after some more unusual designs in the near future.

We're trying to focus on quality over quantity, but knowing quality when you see it requires a lot of knowledge. I stumbled across this site in a random search, and I am happy I found it. There's a lot I need to learn.

I may not post very much, at least not at first. If anything, I'll have questions rather than information.

Till later.
