Can someone identify this fork for me? Replacements shows its an "individual hor d'oeuvres fork" while an [an auction] sale shows it's a "cocktail fork". Funny story how I came across this. I purchased an antique piece of furniture last year and one cabinet was locked. The piece didn't come with a key so we just haven't used it. Well, today I got bored and picked the lock and this fork was sitting in the back corner all by itself. My wife and I joked about what may be in there but never actually thought anything would be. Isn't a cocktail fork the same thing as an hors d'oeuvre fork? What a fun find--you clearly need to make yourself a plate of hors d'oeuvres or a bowl of shrimp cocktail and take turns eating it with your fork! IP: Logged |

Like most manufacturers, Jensen marketed the same or similar pieces for different uses, but those little forks generally appear in Jensen catalogs as either a 'daddelgaffel' (date fork) or 'citrongaffel' (lemon fork), and a bit larger fork was usually offered as a 'paalægsgaffel' (cold cuts fork). The shape of the tines varied by pattern and date, with the 'Cactus' lemon fork in fairly recent Jensen catalogs having straight tines (the shrimp-cocktail fork has three tines). The clip below, from a 1935 catalog, shows a daddelgaffel in the No. 42 pattern, with the description saying, "The small fork is very useful for dates or for small plates of lemon slices, butterballs, or the like." ~Cheryl IP: Logged |
