I grew up with the most beautiful collection of my great grandmother and grandmother's silver. We had all sorts of cool things like relish trays with handles and powder sugar shaker spoons and they were all beautiful. Of all the things they had on display the only thing I wanted when I grew up was the Gorham Fontainebleau silverware. I polished it three times a year... just after Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.

As my mom got older and was living by herself, she became lonely, I guess and showed the silver to her handyman. Shortly afterwards it all disappeared and she refused to believe it was him. We all did... he was so nice. But a pawn shop turned him in to the police and he was caught but none of my lovely silverware was recovered. I was heartbroken...I had been polishing that for 50 years!!! And if you are familiar with that pattern you know that every piece has a different picture on it.

I know it's not the same when you try to sell things but we won tickets to Antiques Roadshow and we took the set in with us. They told us it was worth $xx,000...place settings for 12 and each place had a zillion different pieces. She only got $x,000 from her insurance company.

Anyway, because of this robbery, I hid all of my silver and so I don't enjoy it because I know it can disappear in the blink of an eye. I'm heartbroken but I'm selling all but two butter knives that I'm having made into a bracelet.

That's a very sad story Gettysburg, from both a loss and trust perspective. Treasure your bracelet as a happy memory of your grandmother.

And I had to buy the Fontainebleau pieces from [snip at auction] to make the bracelet because everything else was gone. I didn't realize how attached I was to all this artwork until it was gone. It was a tremendous emotional loss. Weird experience.

The combination of the loss of the objects and the knowledge that a person you trusted took advantage of someone you love must be very painful. I'm so sorry.
