Hello,

I won this trophy recently and would simply like to find out more about it. I do not collect silver, nor do I have much knowledge of it. The trophy has to be returned after a year and if I can I would like to find a replica that I can keep. It is for this reason that I posted (in the hope of gaining some friendly advice) since I have been unable to find anything like it online...

I have a hallmarked Elkington & Co trophy which I'd like to find a replica of. So far, I have been unable to find another even remotely similar and so wondered whether anybody could help give me some more information on it / has seen another similar?

Many thanks.

These are the main hallmarks. They are very worn so I'm struggling to accurately date it. I can see it's a 'Z' but am unsure of the shape it is in?

The dimensions are as follows:
Base of cup to top - 14.75cm
Base to top of handles - 15.5cm
Cup width (across rim) - 10cm
Width including handles - 18cm

I have another photo of the makers name and a number under the trophy but it won't let me upload it at the moment.

It's a Birmingham hallmark for the assay year 1924/25.

It is not a common shape for a cup so finding a same or similar one may be a bit more than just a challenge. Since it is relatively small - a bit over 5 inches high - you might consider having a duplicate made. Any good silversmith could do it as it is not especially complicated in form. It is mostly something that could be spun on a lathe and given its smallish size the amount of silver metal would not be overly great. Carving the handles might take just as long as making the cup but they are not carved and ornamented very much so they should not be a great challenge either. Still, you would be paying a highly skilled artist for a fair number of hours of their professional time and expertise plus the cost of the materials so it would not be inexpensive. If you want to go this route you would end up with a close rather than just a generic silver cup. Is there any engraving on the other side of it? A good silversmith can also copy engravings. If you need help in finding an expert silversmith the folks here any be able to make a recommendation or two. There are very few left in the world today with these hard won skills and with the necessary specialized tools and workshop.

Thank you for your reply. smile
I have looked into a quote for a replica to be made which, like you say, was not inexpensive. As an artist, I appreciate the workmanship that goes into making something like this but having one made is not something I can consider at the moment.
The trophy does have an engraving on the other side so I think I may have to choose another trophy in as similar a style as possible and just replicate the engraving. Thank you for your help.

You may want to search on the words 'loving cup'. Then you also may wish to include words such as silver plate. Sterling ones can be a bit dear often because some people who buy them are going for the award that was being made such as winning a yachting race or a golfing title from long ago or such. Also some were made by well known silver companies which can carry a premium as well. Whatever you buy second hand will most often already have engraving on it. This can be buffed out by a professeional though if you go with silver plate you would then also need to get the whole cup replated. This is also not inexpensive though not on the scale of commissioning one of the small handful of the remaining talented silver smiths to make you one from scratch. Let us know how things work out for you, and if you do ultimately decide to have one made bespoke, feel free to ask us for suggestions of talented silver smiths as there are very few of them left.
