Just read Bille Hougart’s informative article & thought it might be fun to post a set of spoons from UITA6 Don Smouse. There are some wonderful stories online posted by people with special memories of their visit to the Borrego Pass, NM post run by Don & his wife Fern for about 40 years.

Those are wonderful! The same iced tea spoon is pictured on page 71 in Kline's 'Navajo Spoons' (2001), she suggests that though the Navajo produced snake spoons, they had a cultural aversion to their depiction, also noting, "Snakes may also be one of the more common spoon types made by the Zuni and Pueblo smiths since their beliefs about snakes vary from those of the Navajo."

Should note that your list of UITA traders/trading posts, which looks to be from the Wright book, has been added to by Hougart, and he attributes mark UITA-3 to either Toadlena Trading Post or Two Grey Hills Trading Post, NM, and mark UITA-22 to Manuelito Trading Post, NM (Dean Kirk).

Thanks, Ladies, I appreciate your comments.

Until recently, my criteria for purchasing silver has been 1) aesthetically pleasing to me & 2) my ability to use it on my table. Now I want to know its pedigree!

When I saw these snakes, I immediately thought they looked whimsical (point 1), but couldn’t envision them, because they looked so “Southwest,” used with any of my Victorian tableware (point 2).

Still, they captured my fancy, & one day — VIOLA — I realized they would work beautifully in the role of “The Serpent” in a “Garden of Eden” over-the-top-floral tablescape! I purchased them.

In the 1940s my Dad was stationed in San Diego with the USN, submarine service. When the sub would deploy for an extended cruise, my Mom would travel by train back to Nashville to stay with my Grandmother. Mom had many stories about the train stopping at trading post as it came through the Southwest for travelers to purchase sandwiches, cold drinks, & trinkets. I still have the earrings & ring from a parure that she purchased at one such stop; her granddaughter & great-granddaughter now wear the concho belt with turquoise.
