Novelty Hamilton & Diesinger wine bottle holder, Philadelphia, 1880-1899.

Recently acquired this Hamilton & Diesinger wine bottle holder (Philadelphia, 1880-1899). Looks like a novelty piece since it possesses all the elements of the game of chess: king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, & pawn.

In mint condition. Marked “sterling” & trademark for H & D. Would love to know more, or see other similar novelty pieces.

I've never seen anything like it. I agree with your thoughts that it is trying to be a chess related object, but the designs are a bit of a hodge-podge. My first thought was that it could have been meant to be a trophy for chess club tournaments because of the plaque area on the side. It is not engraved there so this may have been a trophy that was never awarded. As for it being something that could hold a wine bottle I suppose that is a possibility, but an unawarded chess trophy seems to me to be a possibly greater likelihood given that its design might not fit well at most formal dinner tables.

Interesting piece as it is in the shape of the Rook, but it has symbols for the Queen, King, Knight and Bishop.
Does it work as a wine bottle holder?

Wine bottle fits perfectly!
In this photo, you can see the pawn depicted in the base & stem.

This piece is so unusual, I think it would have had very limited appeal to the general public just as an object for retail sale.

Perhaps it was intended to be a trophy that had a utilitarian function as a wine bottle holder. If it HAD to be designated one or the other, “trophy” might be most logical, but odd that it was never engraved. Many pieces have a cartouche for monogramming or engraving.

Was hoping others might surface that depicted other games or things of interest. Guess I am pack to calling it a novelty!

The base could be the pawn.
Is there any sign that the top had a lid? If so it could double as an ice bucket.

Rim gives no indication of a lid or cover. There is a bit of an interior edge further from the lip that can be attributed to the design of the crenelated top.

What a great find. A few thoughts about what this may have looked like and represented to a late Victorian/Edwardian. Chess would have been a regular parlor game. Some, like old uncle Fred, might have pursued it on a serous club level. At the same time Silversmiths were vying for original, unique and different objects in a very crowded field. Also it is still “high Victorian” design - everything and the kitchen sink mentality still is king!

All in all I see this as a high street experiment and really not out of the ordinary for the time. Having said that it IS now out of the ordinary and therefor is quite extrodinary!

Perhaps I am not seeing something from the angle of the photo that has the wine bottle in it, but from what I am seeing I think that the bottle does not go down deeply enough for it to chill all of the wine in a full or near full bottle. Also, it appears in the photo to not have enough space around the circumference of the bottle to accommodate ice all around - it seems a bit too tight for that. While one can use anything for whatever they wish, I am still seeing this as more of a loving cup in it overall design and more likely an unawarded chess trophy.
