I thought I'd add an addition to the topic, Basket Weave Designs an extremely well defined Wood & Hughes c. 1880 sterling 3 1/4" pepper pot. The "tag" has Cleveland engraved on it, I assume this would have been a souvenir piece? It's very tactile and when I see it I'm drawn to running my fingers over the "basket weave" and "tag".

Cleveland could refer to Grover Cleveland as it would have been made during Cleveland's life time.
Is the tag affixed to the contained or is it free swinging? Either way it is a beautiful pepper pot.

ahwt, interesting idea, I never thought about a Grover Cleveland connection. The tag is affixed as is the rope which encircles the neck. Would this have been part of a set or purchased as a single item?

You know I love this!! I've also seen napkin rings in this pattern, with a similar shape.

I have a W&H napkin right with a basketwoven pattern just like the one in the Whiting napkin rings in the original thread. I'm kind of wondering if it was made with a rolled die. I'll take a photo in daylight soon.

Meanwhile, here's a photo of a cream-and-sugar set by Gorham, in what turns out to be a basket pattern inspired by Russian kvass jugs woven from birch bark.

My original thread about this cream-and-sugar set:
Gorham mummy-wrapped cream and sugar set

Re Cleveland, it's not that uncommon as a last name. I bet it's just the name of the owner.

Isn't this considered trompe l'oeil?

Polly, I really like the cream and sugar set, they also have that tactile look to them careful you don't spill the contents...

Thanks, Trefid! They're more stable than they look.
