Greetings! It has been a while since I've posted, so it is nice to be back.

This set of four knives is part of the collection my husband and I inherited from his Norwegian family. They are unusual in that the serrated edge is the straight side, not the curved side that is typical. I've enjoyed using them because they are similar in size to a cheese knife but the serration is particularly helpful with hard cheeses. That said, I always have to point out to guest that the serration is on the "other" side.

Anyone know what the original use may have been? I've determined that these are likely silver plate, though I love the design. They are about 6.5 inches long. The other pieces in our collection range from 1890 - 1920's, so I assume these would be in that range as well. Thanks in advance! - E

(Sorry - I think this should have been posted in Continental / International Silver)

It may just be that the designer wanted two functions on the same knife. One for breaking a hard surface and then one for cutting.
Silver cake knives are also configured like this.

Beautiful little knives! Possibly, they're for fruit & citrus. In old US patterns , it's common to find knives with the serration on the 'up' side for peeling oranges/citrus; some companies also made fruit knives with a regular edge for apples, etc but there's no reason your knives couldn't serve a dual purpose.

I did some additional internet research, and I think you're right - these were citrus knives - likely set at the table at breakfast for something like portioning grapefruit or oranges. Cooked grapefruit halves were a part of my traditional Christmas morning breakfast, so I totally get the need for them.
