Hi Folks, I must admit that other than some silver pocket watches, (I much prefer silver to gold), I don't really have much experience with silver or silver plate. I have recently been going through some old items and came across a silver thermometer stand(broken thermometer) It was pretty filthy, brown and black stains everywhere. Anyway i cleaned it up a a bit, maybe not the right thing to do, and came across some marks. WMF EP & as
I think I have found this to be a German manufacturer, that it is Electroplated and it is alpaca, or Alabta silver (which I think means it is just base metal, with no actual silver at all). Anyway it is very nice looking and there seems to be a market for WMF electroplated items. I would love to know if anyone has any other info, If its not worth much I was considering having it converted to a pocket watch stand. any help appreciated

Welcome to the forums slabery. We can't provide assistance as to valuation, but it is a very good looking piece. WMF is a well known maker and you are correct that the piece is silverplate as evidenced by the EP mark (Electroplate). Not sure about who the as mark is at this point. Perhaps another member has more info.

Wurtemberg Metalware Factory is the company that made your pretty thermometer stand. Quite a bit of information is given at the linked web site.

I would think you could have the broken thermometer replaced although it might take some investigation to find the right length. You may want to write the company directly as they are still in business.
Thanks for sharing.
