Morning all,

My name is Inchpractice and I'm trying to date a few old pieces of antique silver. I've succeeded with some but not others.
This ladle seems particularly difficult as some of the symbols/animals are hard to make out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello Inchpractice. Can you share with the other members what your interest in silver is.

The surface of your ladle has a pewter look to it. Is it possible that pewter is the metal used rather than silver?
It way it is a very nice ladle.

I don't have a great interest in silver tbh.
My late grandfather gave me a few silver items which I admired and wanted to keep forever. Now thanks to Brexit and the pandemic I have to sell them so I can pay the mortgage.
That's why I'd like to correctly date and identify them first.

I wouldn't know.
I don't know anything about pewter, is it usually hallmarked?

Hi Inchpractice.

Please read what I am going to say with an understanding that my intention is to be kind and helpful to you. Since you are undertaking pre-sale research it would be great if you could please go back and take another look at the SSF Forum Guidelines that you agreed to when you signed up. This Forum is different from most typical internet fora in that there are a couple of requirements among these Guidelines that are needed for both legal and politeness reasons.
For quick reference I have copied these below. Posting on this Forum is limited to collectors who enjoy discussing and learning about their silver for the joy of their hobby. Some of the experts here who provide their expertise also have businesses where they charge for their expertise in commercially related identification services. I would gently suggest that you might want to seek out a local appraiser in your area with whom you can work to help you identify and market your things. They are the best source for the kind of help you are looking for.

The Silver Salon Forums are not intended as a free instant ID service to help sellers (i.e., eBay or amateur/professional sellers).

Soliciting information from the Silver Salon Forums, then using it immediately to sell an item, is rude.
