Hello again everyone. I bought this recently. It was so black and encrusted with dirt that I had to wash my hands first when I got home. Originally I thought it was a grape and vine decoration but since then it seems to be some sort of description of a pineapple:

Chrysler Museum of Art

June seems to have a similar example above. The one I have is not nearly so detailed.

I find it hard to believe this one here is nearly as old.

Anyway there is so much detail I couldn't pass it up.

This is really great. Nice find. Have you discovered any marks?

In my early years of the "hunt", my best find was a spoon that was so dirty & black with tarnish that I thought it was & bought it as pewter. It was actually silver and from circa 1730 NYC.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Unfortunately there aren't any marks that I could identify. This is the closest thing to a mark that I could find.

I Really appreciate the help and interest. let me know if you need any better photos to help decide anything.

I suppose that could be the mark. Perhaps someone else knows more.

Here is an enlargement:

Above is some information that may be useful to you. This information in from Timothy Schroder’s book The Gilbert Collection of Gold and Silver. This collection is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Their curator maybe someone you could contact for more information on your cup.

I think yours is a grape cluster cup. It is different from the pinaapple one in that yours has what appear to be the vine parts that grape vines have and that pineapples do not have.

Another cup from the Gilbert book; this time a so called Doppelpokale. I added it for the term used to describe the lobs. Here they call it gothic lobate style. This term may be useful for google searches. The lobs may be grapes as suggested by Kimo.

Scott, thanks for enlarging that photo. I wish I had more to go on as far as marks are concerned. Oh well.

ahwt, thanks for that interesting research. I've done a bit more poking around on the internet and agree with Kimo that this is more of a grape and vine design. I've found a site that describes these cups as 'Traubenpokal', which apparently means something along the lines of 'a cup in the shape of a bunch of grapes'. At least according to this short informative article:

A Traubenpokal from Nuremberg

Thanks again everyone
