Pictured above is a handmade pumpkin masher that we found this weekend. I am not sure why I am attracted to these handmade tools, but I do find them fascinating. We have a friend that raises chickens (for the eggs) and she asked for all our pumpkins as her chickens will eat every part of a pumpkin with gusto.

I am not sure I will let her use our pumpkin masher, but we will at least show it to her.

I wanted to set the record straight as the pumpkin masher that I identified is really a turnip chopper. From the description of its use, the age of this tool may be earlier than I imagined. It is discussed in the section entitled "Processing Roots and Other Feeds".

Turnips were the original jack-o-lanterns so there is a distant relationship to pumpkins.
