[26-1425]

Hi!

I have 3 pieces of a 4-piece silver service that has been in the family since, apparently, 1825 or so. It's by J. J. Monell, an American silversmith who worked in New York for 11 years, according to one (the only) web reference I found...his signature/logo is on each piece.

Monell seems to be very obscure...only the briefest of references on the internet; his "logo" is not shown on web sites, nor is he listed on some...I searched this site's archives and there is no reference to him.

I believe he was known for high-quality work...an appraiser in 1981 commented that the workmanship was "excellent."

Does anyone know of him? Is there anything special or notable about his work?

I struggled with my digital camera to photograph the signature/logo, but didn't get a good photo. If there is interest, I will post photos of the pieces and of the signature/logo.

Thank you!!

May I suggest as kindly as I possibly can that you read the guidelines for using this site. There is assistance included for posting images, and you will be asked to give an introduction concerning your interest in silver. You have a worthy topic, and you're probably going to find as much help here as you will anywhere else.

You will find that any image will help elicit responses but no image is a real bummer. There is automatically interest in all things silver so why would you wait to post an image until interest is expressed. Even if your images are not the best at least there would be an image. An image of the item would help as verbal descriptions are interpreted differently by each reader. Makers marks can be similar hence the need for an image. If marks are very similar then the style of item can be of immense help in deciding who the maker may be. The member are eager to assist and the more info the greater the liklihood of members being able to assist.
