My 90-year-old friend Eve has what appears to be a Freemason's medal, presented to her grandfather in 1879. From what I can tell, it's a Fireman's Medal from the I.O.G.F.

It's attached to a thick chain that's marked with the London lion, a small q, and the maker' mark is J&E F.

Can anyone tell me who J&E F was? He lived in Yorkshire all his life.

Many thanks,
TG

The maker's mark J&EF does not appear in Culme's book on London Gold & Silvermsiths 1838 - 1914. Could you post a picture?

What do you mean by 'the London lion'? If you mean the uncrowned leopard head, okay, but if you mean the lion passant, well that isn't just for London.

The I.O.G.F. would be the Independent Order of Good Fellows, a fraternal organization.
