This beaker is marked 13 and F. Francisci which certainly sounds Italian. The seam is particularly interesting in that it is more like a greek key pattern, or indented. I have seen this more often on brass items than silver. I hope these marks keep everyone busy for a while.

Is a year and half too long a while?

I was bored so I went through some old postings before I joined, and found a couple I could shed some light on. Here, for instance, I can identify your F. Francisci as Franz Francisci - or Franciscus Francisci, as Slavic smith's names are often Latinized.

He worked in Mosovce (known as Mósóc in Hungarian and Mossowce in German), which is now part of the Slovak Republic but was then part of the Hungarian Empire. Mosovce was too small to support a guild, so Francisci became a provincial master of the large Banská Bystrica (German: Neusohl; Hungarian: Besztercebánya) guild in 1850. As a provincial master, he was not required to submit his wares for testing & marking, but rather was subject to occasional "spot checks" by the guild. He worked until at least 1872.

He must have been quite active, if not downright prolific, judging by the number of pieces with his mark that survive. I've come across a half dozen or so over the years - not many, but certainly more than one might expect.

It is never too late, although I don't know if I still have the beaker. How do you know so much on such an obscure topic?

Blakstone, when you were bored did you go all the way back? Over a year ago when we started this salon I posted a lot of unidentified marks, most of which remain that way still.

Alas, all these posts have me stumped. (So much for my reputation.) :-) Hope springs eternal, though, and as I've shown, I'm ever reluctant to give up the chase!
