Hello,

My mother has a tea/coffee set she purchased in Germany in 1956. It's a silver set lined with white porcelain marked 1000/1000 with the name SPAHR. Under the lids are the initials CM inside a crest topped with a crown.

Is anyone familiar with Spahr? No one seems to know anything about this set. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Les

Silvercoated porcelain sets experienced a revival during the 1950's (they had been popular earlier at least once, around the turn of the century). The "1000/1000" may be part of a quality designation for the silvercoating - I believe that it is often preceeded by another number. Regardless, the items of the kind I have seen had very thin coatings with some actually having acquired a 'piebald' look due to the silver wearing off over large areas.

As for the makers marks, you won't find them in silver books. You might have a chance if you can get access to a book on mid-century German porcelain.
