I am trying to find the dates and makers of four Swedish teaspoons. All have the three crowns "cat's paw mark", as well as the following:

Maker, Date stamp, Additional mark
GAS, A3, ?lion's face
EN, E3, too worn
NW, R4, something like an S or &
AGE, (repaired erasing date)

Am I correct in thinking the date sequence A was introduced in 1759, A2 in 1782, and A3, A4 etc every 24 years after that?

The GAS/R4 spoon has an additional large stamp, an oval marked in dots with the initials "U&M" in script". The impression was struck with such force it is visible on the front! Retailer, owner, hotel ?????

Thanks for any help

Hi Patrick,

I have very limited information on Swedish marks, but the first spoon should date to 1807 (A3), the second to 1811 (E3), and the third to 1847 (R4). The dating rotation does run every 24 years, with J and W being the missing letters. The other marks (lions head, ampersand type S, etc.) are probably city marks. Sorry, no clue on the makers. Is the GAS spoon R4 or A3?

Have to chuckle when Swedish date marks come up, once had a dealer insist that the beautiful 1869 spoon he had was silver plate because it was stamped "PS" (P5). Oh well, nice $1.00 buy for me!

Thankyou very much, Cheryl. I cleaned up the marks on the GAS spoon a little, and I'm now almost certain it is A5 (thus 1855, I guess). This makes much more sense as it is very similar in style to the NW R4 spoon of 1847.
Thanks again, Patrick
