I bought this silver wine taster recently and can't identify the hallmarks. Can any one out there help???
I thought it might be French but I can't find anything like it on the French hallmark web sites.

Thanks in advance johnmac0

I couldn't find the mark either, but I thought you might want my opinion as I have dealt in and collected wine tasters for over 30 years. My guess is the taster is plated, primarily because the 49 mark is probably referring to the thickness of the plate. In looks to be a very bad copy of the Paris 1768 charge mark for small works. If that is the case the marks are probably not listed anywhere and are meaningless. The other hint is that neither of those marks could be a maker's mark, so they are probably just meant to deceive. Finally, as a general rule, wine tasters with the flat thumb piece above the handle are late 19th or 20th century.
I would be curious about what French hallmark web sites you were refering to.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for your quick response. I have to say I am not suprised that you think it might be a copy or that it is plated, it is in such good condition to have any age to it.
There are so many copies of every thing about these days that unless an item has a easily recognizable hallmark then its buyer beware.
