I just recieved a spoon from a relative that is supposedly from Denmark. I'd love to identify the hallmarks? Please help.

The marks are scrolled letter FV?J? next is a head in an oval, then 3 towers, then what looks like a thistle and lastly a lower case t in a sheild shape. thanks

Thinking about this, your marks would appear to be for Edinburgh, Scotland. The FVJ mark would be the maker, the head in an oval the duty mark, the three towers the Edinburgh town mark, the thistle for sterling silver and "t" for the date.

If I'm correct, a lower case "t" was used in 1699/1700, 1825/6 and 1900/1. However, the duty stamp was only used from the late 18th century to c.1890. Thus 1825 seems possible.

If you could post photos of the spoon and the mark, I'm sure someone could tell you for certain.

Patrick,

Thank you for getting back to me. I realized today that the thistle would be for Scotland and after consulting my Jackson's hallmark book found what I was looking for. I still can't identify the maker's mark but am heading to the library to hit the full Jackson's book. Thanks again.
