Your ladle is indeed German, made in Berlin in the mid 1860s. The Berlin guild was unusual in that, beginning in the early 19th century, each piece submitted to them for testing was examined by two Assay Masters: the Primary Assay Master (the Zeichenmeister), and the Secondary Assay Master (the Wardeinmeister). Each was elected by the guild members from their ranks, and each used a different successive letter of the alphabet. The Primary Assay Master’s letter appeared within the city mark (a rampant bear) and the Secondary Assay Master’s mark appeared alone.

Unfortunately, thanks to modern mass production the guild system was dying out in Germany in the 1860s, and the identity of the Assay Masters is not known for your letters. However, the Primary Assay Master using the letter “M” is known to have worked ca. 1863-1869, and the Secondary Assay Master using the letter “E” was working ca. 1864-1868, so there is no doubt about the mid-1860’s date of your ladle.

H. Nevir was a prolific Berlin manufacturer of the 1860s-70s. And, of course, 12 Löt silver is 12/16 or 75% silver, a common German fineness.

Hope this helps!

Dear Blakstone, With your knowledge of German marks you may know the answer to my post on 1/1/04 about Posen Silberwaaren, Germany Would you mind taking a look? Since that post I have found the mark POSEN on other pieces (even one POSEN & POSEN) but not with the triangle/stars punch.
Thanks,
pfitz
