I would be very grateful for any help identifying the maker or pattern of my German 800 silver. My best guess is that it probably dates from the 1920's or 30's. I am new to this forum and to posting pictures, but I hope these photos of the dinner fork and the hallmark will be of some use:

Thanks very much for your help!

The pattern is called "Englisch Chippendale" and is produced by Bremer Silberwarefabrik (more commonly called "BSF") of Bremen, Germany; the burning torch is their trademark. The company was founded in 1905, and I think they might still be in business, as some of their patterns still turn up regularly for sale. I couldn't find a website for them, though.

Hope this helps!

That is marvelously helpful! Thank you so much! (And I'm so pleased to hear that mark described as a "burning torch"--that is far more elegant than my best guess--I was searching for items marked with a "carrot"!)

" ... I think they might still be in business, as some of their patterns still turn up ... "

BSF appears to now be a subsidiary of Wilkens producing only 18/10 ware under the 'BSF' label. It MAY be that Wilkens took over some of their successful patterns in 800.

Blackstone, as I am sure you know, there is quite a bit of 800 silver marked 'BSF'; I suppose it to be later than the torch. Do your references indicate when the torch was changed to the 'BSF' mark? Just curious. TIA!

I've found several European sites selling the Wilkins BSF 18/10 apparently new. I haven't found any new 800 silver, though, so I think that must be correct, that only the 18/10 is being produced now.

I'd like to know about the switch to the squarish BSF trademark, too; good question!

Also, I've noticed that the first number shown in my mark above, what I think is a six or a nine, is not necessarily present. It could be a year, perhaps--or a model number? If anyone knows what that signifies, I'd appreciate hearing.

I checked my notes and can add a little info. BSF was known as Bremer Silberwarenfabrik Hüneke & Co. from 1901-1904 and as simply Bremer Silberwarenfabrik from 1905 on. The company is no longer around, having closed in 1981, and their dies were indeed purchased by M. H. Wilkens & Söhne of Hemelingen bei Bremen.

As for the marks, only the torch mark is listed in a 1925 German Silversmith's Directory that I have, so the "BSF" mark was used at least later than that. I have seen the "BSF" mark on an item dated 1957, but that doesn't mean an awful lot, since inscribed dates can be unreliable; who's to say it wasn't given in 1977 as a 20th anniversary gift?

My best guess is that the "BSF" mark is post-war, and probably mid-1950s at the earliest.

Bremen is a pretty interesting spot, being the home of three of the great modern German silver factories: BSF, Wilkens and Koch & Bergfeld, the last two still in existence.
