I like the look of this object, but am not sure what it is. I suspect it is either a decorative plaque, or part of something, such as a box or case. The base, measuring 4 1/8" by 2 5/8", is mother of pearl with carved decoration. A silver plaque, very architectural in its design, is riveted to the center of the piece. The silver surrounds a natural bump in the mother of pearl. The object looks continental to me.

Any ideas?

One possibility is the cover of a small book - probably a prayer or devotional book

I agree with Patrick, I have seen a number of these removed from books, and a small few still attached, althought this is the first I have seen where the Silver was inside the MOP, rather than the reverse.... Pretty Piece.

I have had quite a few that were glued to the outside of prayer books. This one has what looks like a tabernacle on it, but lacking a cross, my guess is it is judaica.
