Dear Silver Scholars-
Can anyone help me identify the marks on this silver beaker? It is 3 1/4" tall and has a flattened oval form, nearly identical to those pictured on page 109 of G.Bernard Hughes' "Small Antique Silverware" Bramhall House 1957. The caption there says that these were part of traveling sets and the two pictured date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The engraved decoration on mine depicts a wreath, like a laurel wreath, with crossed guns (rifles?) at its bottom. The only mark is a tiny rectangle in which are the letters IW above the numbers 13. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

The "13" indicates 13 Löt silver, or 13/16 pure = 81.25%. This also tells me that your beaker is not British but Continental, most likely German or Central European (Poland, Hungary, etc.), though some Scandinavian and other countries used the Lötige system as well. Unfortunately, the simple "IW" maker's mark will be nigh impossible to trace without any other city/guild mark to help. Likewise, these beakers - alone or in sets - are very common and can only be roughly dated based on style and/or construction. How about a photo?

The number 13 is a Germanic standard mark for 13/16 silver (81.25%), so your object is of Continental origin.

We will move this post to the Continental Forum.

Silver Lovers-
Thanks so much for your astute observations. This information will help me to continue investigating. I'll try to add a photo in the near future.
