Hi there,

I have found a pair of Russian Tablespoons which are very plain fiddle pattern and not in the greatest of condition. The marks are what looks like a man or horseback, 84, a man on horseback, then what looks like SL or SD, any ideas?

I also have a small beaker which I think may be Russian. The two marks on the base are a scarfed womans head and the number 3 and the initials IH or HI. Does anyone know if this is Russian? Has all Russian Silver got the "84" mark and is it the same quality of silver i.e. Sterling, 925?

First, your fotos are worthless and it would be better to make some sketches if you can not make better pictures of the hallmarks.

This are Russian hallmarks. On the spoon you can see St.George and the dragon, the townmark of Moscow, in this form ca.1856. The rest I can not read. Maybe you know that the Russian language has cyrillic letters, not Latin letters (with some exeptions).

The small beaker is as far as I can see from Poland.(Woman with scarf, looking left, number 3, left of her head (for 800/1000), right of her head a letter of the assayoffice, mostly W for Warscaw.

The Russian silverstandards are:
84 Zolotniks = 875/1000
88 Zolotniks = 916/1000
91 Zolotniks = 947/1000

With better informations I can give better answers.

Hi there,

Sorry about the photos. I doubt I'll be able to do much better as the marks are very rubbed. Is the beaker dateable, it has one band of embossed floral design near the top and the makers mark is definitely IH or HI depending on which way up you hold it. Thanks for the info sazikov. I was wondering, what book do you use for Russian Marks? I am waiting until the next Tardy's is brought out, hopefully in a few weeks but I don't know if it has Russian marks?

The hallmark on the beaker was in use from ca. 1920 until April 11th 1947. Unfortunately I have no sources for the Polish silversmiths after 1900.

Tardy is more "broadband" or as we say: "A dog from every village". If you want real informations you need the specialised books for your kind of collection. Most of them are out of print and very hard to find, but silverphiles are acustomed to suffer....

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I haven't heard anything about this. Is there a reprint scheduled? I had purchased a copy of Tardy for an associate, but I'd like one for myself. Will they become more readily available?

Hi there,

I was at Ingliston antiques fair in Edinburgh over the weekend and there is one man who sells all the latest books on different subjects. He said there was a reprint of Tardy due to be released within the next 6 weeks. Fingers crossed.
