i am trying to find out more information a out hippolitus poignand' silver, and also a little history about the character for a university assignment can anyone help!!

For this we need more than a name. We need to know when and where he worked. Silver is classified more by locale than by maker, for most purposes. A time period also helps. Good luck with this.

HP is a Calcutta maker (fl.1793-d.May 1805)one of the 'Makers of Indian Colonial Silver 1760-1860'. There are brief notes on him in Wynyard Wilkinson's book of the same title.

J Hippolitus Poignand was burried in the French Cemetery in Calcutta. He was born in 1761 and died on the 16th May 1805, aged 43.

The cemetery was recently moved to make way for development. A list of occupants can be found at [gone from the internet - eneaguide.com/doc/cimetieres/C-IND-A.HTM]

I, for one, am very curious as to why you have chosen this silversmith for your studies, and hope you will share the results of your investigation with us!
