I have found a beautiful piece that I don't know what it is for for where it was made. Please help. I think it might be Dutch but don't know for sure, this because of what I gleaned off a website on the web. It is my latest addition to my collection and I knew it was special when I bought it at a recent garage sale.
3/6/05 Sunday

I will try for some better pics of marks today.
Thanks for your replies. smile

I am at a loggerhead and do not know where else to look, thank you in advance for your help.

Can you take a closeup of the marks or describe them, as they are too small to see...

One cup base has what looks like"C3"or an"L3" in a stamp with another stamp that is a "B"

The other cup base has the same "C3" or "L3" stamp in addition to a cursive or what could be called a "script" letter I. This I also has 9 or 10 horizontal lines behind it.

AG925-1000 website, if I am within guidelines to mention, has a perfect rendition of the "I" under Dutch silver. This is what led me to believe that it may be just that. But I want to be sure. I will say in addition that the pointed lids are on crystal jars that sit in the cups. It did not show up too well, as did the close ups I tried to take. Thank you for editing my pics and I apologize for my clumsiness.

Your replies and help is appreciated.

I am not familiar with the marks, but I think you have what could be called a double ink well stand. Very attractive and perhaps a close up of the marks might help in identification.

Hi, What you have is a desk set inkwell, from the looks it is in rococo stile, most likely from france from about 1890,There is a book at the library called kovels guide to inks copyright 1971, there you will find other pieces very similer.

Finally I have the close ups of the marks on the inkstand. I have also included a side view with one of the jars removed.

Well please let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance.

The mark "i" is also on both of the lids edge albeit very small and crude in comparison.

The mark you found in the book is a Dutch tax mark for local production which does not indicate the quality of the silver. So it is either lower grade silver than .833 or plated. I can't make out either of the other marks, but they don't look like most the Dutch marks I have seen, which means they may be plate marks.

Thanks for the reply, I have examined every nook and cranny and cannot find the typical indications of plate, also, the piece was represented as solid silver.

As you can see in the closeups of the bottom it is worn and using a jewelers loop I cannot see a difference in the color or surface. I think somehow I need to have it tested though I do not want to damage it. This in light of the difficulty in the marks.

I hope someone out there has seen this mark.

Thank you all.
