[26-0406]

I have recently purchased a small silver coffee pot and sugar bowl. They have hallmarks which I cannot identify. The coffee pot has hallmarks:

'standing "horse" with letter K in it and a hallmark letter A. and pressed marks AP.

The sugar bowl has:
pressed marks LF, the horse mark with letter K and hallmarks B.

there is also a scratch mark. I think it is German, but have no idea from which town and how old these two are.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

The standing horse is the symbol for Stuttgart prior to 1888. The K is a date letter, but I don't have a source that says which year. Prior to the 18th century, however, the horse was rearing rather than walking in four legs. Hope this helps.

Sorry, tmockait, but this is not the Stuttgart horse, which is depicted leaping, not rearing. It isn’t even a horse at all: what we have here is the Berlin bear. The giveaway is the dual assay system with two assayer’s letters, one in the city mark (for the Zeichenmeister or primary assayer) and one by itself (for the Wardeinmeister or secondary assayer). The marks are as follows:

Coffee Pot:
Zeichenmeister’s mark: Bear with K, mark of Berlin primary assayer J.C.S. Kessner, working 19 Jan 1819 – 4 Sep 1854.
Wardeinmeister’s mark: A, the mark of Berlin secondary assayer B.G.F. Andreack, working 19 Jan 1819 – 20 Feb 1842
Maker’s Mark: A.P., unknown to me. I notice, however that the bar of the A is either very faint or missing entirely. My guess is that it is actually the center peak of a “W”, and that the mark is actually “W.P.” for Wilhelm Peters (1793-1864), a prolific Berlin maker.

Sugar Bowl:
Zeichenmeister’s mark: Bear with K, the mark of Berlin primary assayer J.C.S. Kessner, working 19 Jan 1819 – 4 Sep 1854.
Wardeinmeister’s mark, B, the mark of Berlin secondary assayer C.F. Deppe, working 20 Feb 1842 – 1 Dec 1847
Maker’s Mark: L.F.: the mark of Ludwig Fritz, working Berlin 1st half, 19th C.

So both your items are from Berlin, the coffepot 1819-1842 by “A.P.” (possibly "W. P." for Wilhelm Peters), the sugar bowl 1842-47 by Ludwig Fritz. Given the different Wardeinmeister’s marks, I would guess that they both date not to far off from 1842.

Hope this helps!
