My in-laws gave my husband and I a set of spoons that have flowers at the ends of the handles (not a flat handle with flower on it -- an actual sculpted flower!). They are both different handle ends and different shaped spoons bowls, but are both about 5" in length and the spoon is 1 3/8" in diameter.

The back of one has a lion on it. I don't think it is the passant -- just doesn't look the same as the others I've seen on the few sterling pieces we have. It also has the makers name "Harris & Son". One spoon also says "purple orchid" and has some other indistinguishable word or mark. I can't even make it out with a loupe.

Does anyone know about this maker. American or English?

Thanks!

Please read the first topic in this list -"Please read before you post" - photographs are necessary for the identification of marks and patterns, and it will direct you to instructions on how to do it.

Without the pics I suggest Harris & Son are the silversmiths based in Perth and Albany, Western Australia.
The firm started in 1921 and Charles and his son Harold and still manufactures flatware, jewellery etc featuring native flora.
The firm may have a web site but I have not checked.
Further information is in Australian Jewellers, Gold & Silversmiths Makers & Marks, ISBN 0 646 11042 X.

Ozfred,

Thank you for your comments on the spoons.

My digital camera is out on loan to a friend at the moment. I'm hoping to get it back this evening so I can take pictures and will post them as soon as I can.

My in-laws lived in Australia for a number of years, so your theory has great possibility.

I will do some searching with the info. you posted.

Thanks again, and I will post photos hopefully by tomorrow morning.
