Hi I have this tea/coffee service with the markings: PERUZZI FIRENZE with 800 circled in the middle and V.G. in an oval to the right of the 800 and 81 M1 or MI to the left of the 800. Can anyone help identify this pieces origination and age. Thanks

It's late-20th-century Italian. Peruzzi of Florence ("Firenze") was the retailer; this luxury goods firm opened in 1948 and is still in business Peruzzispa USA [peruzzi-high-fashion.com/?___store=us&___from_store=it - link gone from the Internet] .

The 81 MI is the identifying mark of the set's actual manufacturer, who was located in Milan ("MI").

The 800 refers to the silver content, the typical Italian standard.

The maker is Mario Vallé S.N.C, 17 Via Volvinio, Milan, currently owned by Carlo & Alberto Vallé. The maker's registry number "81 MI" was assigned to them on 29 April 1931.

If the "81 MI" has a star to the left of it, that would indicate post-1965 manufacture. If not, it's probably from the 1945-1964 period.

Blakstone, how does one trace Italian registry numbers to a particular maker? I've always wondered if there was a good source for them.

thanks

OK, I guess I have to give up one of my secrets here. Go to:

Portale dell'Oreficeria

Under the "per nome [by name]" tab you can search a current Italian gold/silver manufacturer by name, and under "per marchio [by mark]" you can search by the registry number.

There (per marchio), select the two letter province code in the pulldown "provincia [province]" menu, and type the number in the "marchio [mark]" box. Click "cerca [search]" and, with any luck, a box will pop up giving the owner of that registry code.

Of course, this is all in Italian and only includes current registry numbers; discontinued numbers by closed manufacturers are not listed. I've had pretty good luck here, though, being able to identify them about 50% of the time.
