I have a silverspoon, handmade, rather simple. Probably made in the early 1800.
The mark consists o 3 parts:

  • A house with 3 towers and the letter D.
    A name, probably "NIEMEYER"
    The figures 84

Can anybody tell me where and when it was made?

Thank you in advance

I have Tardy's book which is a really good general reference on international standard marks. Tardy's doesn't cover everything, so over the years we have found it necessary to secure additional references which provide greater detail about a country's standard marks.

Although I am not sure, I believe your spoon was made in Germany and may be silver plate. I don't have a good reference book on German solid silver or silver plate, so if anyone knows of one please let me know. Nevertheless, here is my rational about your spoons marks:

  • The house with 3 towers and the letter D. is similar to the German marks found on page 40 of Tardy's. The D is most likely an date letter.
  • The 84 is often associated with Russian silver mark for 875/1000 solid silver but in this case I believe the 84 is more similar to the French silver plate mark 84. On French silver plate, 84 represents number of grams of silver deposited per relative proportion of the base metal.
  • I don't speak a word of German (Das is true wink ) but I suppose you could say NIEMEYER is German sounding and could be the makers mark.

Do you think the spoon is solid silver or silver plate? Is there base metal showing?

This is just a guess. I hope someone can recommend some better German silver marks reference materials and more definitively answer you post.
