I bought this demitasse spoon in Riga. According to my research it was manufactured by Lutz & Weiss of Pforzheim, founded in 1882, and remarked in Kostroma, some time between 1927 and 1958.

First, can some one confirm my id? Second, the Riga dealer (author of the silver book I posted), dated the spoon 1900-1910. This determination got me wondering about remarking. Why would there be a 17 year (minimum) gap between manufacture in Germany and remarking in Russia? Did remarking occur upon importing? Did the Soviets force people to have their silver remarked? Or is the dating off?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

My understanding would be that if/when silver from one country enters the trading system of another (by import or by being offered on the secondary or "used" market), it would often fall under that second countrys regulatory system, and thus require marking in some form. Often goods would be moved privately, not by way of trade, so would not be exposed to this.

The French had a well developed system that took account of this, as did some others. I have somewhere some Gorham flatware for example, with the 'swan' French import mark. As well, some Russian flatware re-marked in Latvia, and more Russian re-marked in Estonia. It is a very interesting byway of the silver collecting field.
