Below is a small (about 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 2 1/2" high) continental silver Dog House Bank. It is marked on the base 12 E.
I believe that it is German or Austrian made somewhere in the first half of the 19th century.

Am I correct?

Anybody out there have more information on this little novelty?

Hello Richard.

What a great piece!

I cannot help on the mark, but I have a question regarding its function.

I see no slot for coins that most banks have. Could it be some sort of keeper of treasures (like tea or jewels), hence the dog guarding it?

Sure someone will come up with the mark ID for you. Could the E refer to Esslingen Germany......just a thought.

Enjoy the day!

You probably know this already, but the 12 is the "standard" mark for 12 lothige (12/16ths) silver, widely used in Central and Eastern Europe before the 20th Century. I don't know the "E".

Could the E be a year mark?

Just a thought but I don't think this type of sloped roof dog house was around much before the second half of the nineteenth century. Could be wrong tho.

Most often when I think about a bank (aka "piggy bank") it is something that has a coin slot. I don't see a coin slot. On the other hand I suppose a coin slot might just be my American experience and that elsewhere no coin slot was the norm. Maybe this isn't a money bank but rather is a jewelry lock box?

Hello again Richard!

Happy Holiday!

Just another thought about your dog house. Have you considered the possibility of it being a humidor? If it is perhaps a faint odor of tobacco could be detected.

Please let us know if you get the correct answer.

Enjoy the day.

Erfurt in Germany use an E. That correspond with the figure as well.
