A friend of my recently brought this shell spoon thinking is was American coin silver and asked me to identify it. It is a beautiful spoon, but I had to tell him it was not American.

Tardy shows several examples of crescent moons and crowns, mostly from Germany or Austria. None are quite like the marks on this spoon I would guess it is was before 1840 and from either Germany or Austria. I think that 12 means it is.750 silver.

Any information on the origin of this spoon would be appreciated.

The look of the shell is not quite what I would have expected on an American version but it is very close.

Left to right:

An open boat = the city mark of Helsinki, Finland
The Finnish crown = Finnish state guarantee mark in use from 1810
T2 = Finnish date code for 1852
G.A.S. = maker Gustaf Adolf StršmbŠck, working Helsinki, 1841-1870

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Blakstone's reply is totally correct. The computer just didn't get the two scandinavian letters correct in the silversmiths name so the 'š' should be an 'o' with two dot's above and the the 'Š' an 'a' with two dot's above.

So the silversmiths name is Gustaf Adolf Strömbäck.

Regards,
Juhana

Thanks Blakstone and Kerppola. I was looking in the wrong section of Tardy, but even knowing the answer it would have been hard for me to pick it out of Tardy.
Thanks again.
