Hi,

Could anyone tell me what these silver marks mean? They are from an old potato spoon but I would like to know how old the spoon is and where it comes from.

Thank you.

Just to get the ball rolling these are Dutch hallmarks. The N in a circle is the date later which looks first half 20c but I don't know where my Dutch silver book is to look it up. The lion with a 2 under it is a standard mark. 800 silver or 833?

Well, I certainly enjoyed looking up the date and purity on that other well-known website, despite the suggestion we hold off on further discussion pending proper image posting.

You have pointed up the difference between the two approaches: "That other" one attempts to encourage do-it-yourself identifications and its participants are willing to attempt to provides simple identificatons of marks for those who can't (or won't) do-it-themselves. It has not developed the kind of in-depth discussions that we are interested in encouraging. To help encourage their interest in learning more about slver, we strive to help our new participants develop the tools to engage in these discussions with us, so that they will not simply get a quick answer and then go away, which they can do elsewhere. We encourage our established members to help in this process by encouraging new registrants to conform to our practices.

The piece is .833 as indicated by the Roman numeral II under the lion. The letter "N" is the date letter for 1923 (judging by its style and the punch). The letter on the Perseus head appears to be a "B". If so your spoon was assayed in Utrecht. Can we see the whole spoon?
