Here is a solid silver dragon, Meiji period, with its maker's signature. This was given to the Newark Museum in 1941 as part of a large gift of Asian art...

Any idea who the signature represents? It has just gone on exhibition in our Japanese galleries.

I've been doing some research on this silver dragon with its rock-crystal ball.

The signature says Koreyoshi, which I believe is Ishiguro Koreyoshi, who worked in Musashi province in Japan 1832-1887. The MFA Boston has several exquisite tsuba or sword guards by this artist--and it seems that like many artisans who worked for the samurai warrior market, Koreyoshi would have shifted his skills to making beautiful but non-weapon related objects after the Meiji rule began in 1868.
