[26-1073]

Ahh at last I found out how to post LOL

Hi

I was sent here from GMB ref two Jugendstil Vases - one expert says he can tell they are 1900s and German - same area as WMF, but cannot give me a maker.

I post here hoping this forum can help.

The mark is so small and covered with thick plating

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

These certainly look like WMF in style. The mark is one I am not familiar with. But then I don't know a lot about Eastern European silverplate.

There are some products that clearly look to be German, indeed can be matched exactly with known German production, but do not bear a German mark. What seems to have happened is that these were destined for export and were marked with the language and system of the country for which they were intended. The mark may be for a retailer or wholesaler. It strikes me as Turkish, but I am no expert on that.

Usually, dealers sort of collapse these all into a class of 'WMF type'. And credit WMF as the likely maker. But there were silver makers all over Europe. Some marked examples turn out to be Swedish or Danish or Polish or Czech.

Hope this has helped a little. Sorry, but this is an area that really needs research. By the way, I assume these are plated not a solid silver. Any evidence to the contrary?

What is your interest in these? Are you a dealer or collector? Forgot to ask up front. Got really intrigued by the pieces.

Given the shape, the glass is no doubt original. But glass was made everywhere, so it doesn't really tell us anything.

Does anyone here know if WMF ever farmed out production to factories outside of Germany? Or was it all local then exported?

Hi Dale

I am a glass collector who also has an interest in silver. I have some nice pieces to put on this forum over the next few weeks - some Georgian pieces.

LOL ... its ages since I studied silver or plated goods, if not WMF I thought a related company like Kayserzinn - no go

A world expert on WMF emailed me ref this
quote:
'Hi

Please excuse the tardiness of this reply. After 2 weeks, we returned from China last night. I welcome your emails and will always share what I know. In this case though, it's not much.

I checked my usual resources and these vases have me stumped. They are not Russian and not from the fifties. They appear to be old, German, and of the same period as Art Nouveau/Jugendstil WMF. I agree with the first assessment you posted on April 27th about the possible manufacturers and suggest that this is another job for the silver salon forums at: Silver Salon Forums

They have a forum on silverplate and I bet they can help. I'd be interested in the answer and will follow the thread. You are welcome to post any or all of this. Sorry I am not more help.
Regards,
Jeff '

There seems no reason why WMF would bring glass in from other companies for their metalwork.

In 1883 they built a glassworks at Geislingen - it was not until 1926 that they created their famous Ikora range. It is presumed that the works at Geislingen 'First produced simple cut and engraved glass in the Bohemian style' (L Jackson 20th C Factory Glass) for domestic use and for their own pewter and silver ware creations.

A big give away for me (I am not saying these are WMF btw) is the design at the base of the cartouche, see how it is picked up in the simple engraving on the glass?

I can't say anything at all about the glass (definitely not my field) but the manufacturer of the silver plate is the metalware firm F. W. Quist of Esslingen, Germany. They registered their first mark (not this one) in 1900, but the mark you show is listed in my copy of the 1925 German Goldsmith's Yearbook.

Quist is far better known, however, as one of the leading manufacturers of military helmets during WWII. They are no longer in business, no doubt in part thanks to their position as a prominent supplier to the Third Reich. Try googling "Esslingen" and "Quist" and see what you find.

Hope this helps!
