Hi anyone know anything about Swedish marks? I picked up a cute little dish today with the only marks are PRIMA NS SWEDEN. I haven't cleaned it yet so no pictures.

NS stands for Ny silver which means that it is made of a mixture of metals (nickel, copper and zinc). So it looks like silver but it is not. Refered also as alpaca.

I have a couple of nickel silver items (an old tray for calling cards and a small dish). They seem to scratch easily. At least, they are scratched and the scratches show up whereas on silver items the scratches seem smoother. What is your opinion?

One interesting thing that I have read is that one reason why Nickel Silver objects are coated with a layer of silver is that they are then more harder and thereby more durable. Of course the other reason is that the object looks nicer and looks like silver.

This might explain partly that scratches can be seen better in plain NS objects than plated or pure silver objects.

As we know pure silver is however very soft so can't tell more. Silver objects are of course of lower purity to make them more harder.

To add NS marked on Swedish objects is in Swedish language 'Ny Silver'. In Finnish objects we have the same thing with marking UH meaning in Finnish language 'UusHopea'. So these are same as Nickel Silver (NS) marking in other countries.
