I have a tiny silver cup that I bought at a flea market a couple of years ago (for a quarter) from a man who said it had been his mother's. She came to the US from Eastern Europe or maybe Austria or Germany--I don't now remember where--before WWII. He remembered her always having this cup on her shelf. It was black with tarnish and he thought it was tin.

I showed it to Richard, who showed me that there were teeny, tiny hallmarks. They were too crusted with tarnish to read.

I've polished it and I believe one of them is the French import swan:

But what is the other one? Is it the Austrian Minerva head?

The cup in question is the smallest one in this photo:

Hi Polly,

Sure is a pretty little cup, but I can't find anything to help ID the marks.

Sorry,
Elizabeth

It looks to me like the Italian assay mark; I can't read the number at the bottom of the mark, but it looks like a 3, which would be consistent with the Italian mark for .800 silver. I think this mark was used from 1872 to the 1930's, which would be consistent with the French swan import mark.
