[26-1431]

Can anyone help with the hallmarks please?

There is one in the golden area, some figure and Dfres and one in the handle part some 8 and 0 i suppose it must be 800.

I find it a beautiful piece, but would like some more about it about date, country, maker
if possible.

many thanks already.

Welcome to the forum, Ziela

Your photos look good, but you might get a better response to your question if you follow the forum rules more completely: Guidelines

It would be helpful if you would add some information on your interest in silver in general and why you are asking about this particular object. An additional closeup photo of the numbers 8 and 0 on the handle would be useful, as would a photo of the other side of the blade. Also, is there any history to the server or have you recently acquired it?

Regards,
Kimo

Square shaped maker's marks are usually found on French silver plate. Where is the 800 marking? This looks like the type of piece that might have a silver handle but a silverplated functional end. This looks turn of the century to me.

I placed a picture of the backside, and of the handle, but the mark there 8 and 0 , I suppose must be 800 is impossible to photographe. I recently bought this object on a brocante because I like the beautiful things in silver.
Thanks if someone can help

The mark in the square includes the letters 'Fres' which is the French abbreviation for frères. This translates into English as 'brothers'. The letter D would stand for the name of the brothers after whom the company is named - I do not know who this is. It is not possible to say much about the number 8 and the number 0 you mention because you have not provided a clear photo of them, but if I understand you correctly that they are just an 8 and a 0 then I do not think they stand for 800 or 800 pure silver. And, as Paul mentioned when you find French maker's marks in square shapes they normally indicate that the object is silver plated and not solid silver. Also, the French have a very full set of marks that are required for solid silver objects and they are not on this object.

The style of the server is nouveau which was popular at the end of the 1890s and through the first part of the 1900s, but from what I can see in your photos I do not think this particular server is that old. In the closeup photo of the blade it appears that there is no wear to the metal, and it does not seem to have the quality one would expect to see in a ca. 1900 server. I can not tell for sure without actually holding it and looking closely, but my impression is that it is a recently made copy of an old design, made of silver plated base metal.
