[26-1420]

I received a lovely cherub and lattice bowl and matching under plate from my great aunt as a wedding gift. Unfortunately, she can only tell me that it is early French and she received it from her sister. Unfortunately, her sister has passed on and the trail stops here. The bowl and under plate are striking and the photos do not do the pieces justice. I have internet searched my fingers to the quick and have come up empty handed. The pieces do not have the standard french hallmarks. However, the three hallmarks are very distinctive and are as follows:

    1) a closed crown above a script style letter A,

    2) another closed crown above a script style letter P,

    3) finally another closed crown above a fluer de lis.

I am looking for anyone that can help me identify the history of this piece. Please help.

Thanks!

Danielle

Welcome to the forum Danielle.

The thing about markings (especially ones as complicated as the French made theirs) is that verbal descriptions are normally insufficient to provide a meaningful response. [The photos help.]

Sure that blakstone can provide verification, but believe these are late 19th-early 20th century Hanau, Germany psuedo-marks used by Georg Roth, the style is also typical.

While I am not a specialist in French silver, and I am open to be corrected, from what I can see in the photos I fully agree with Cheryl that your nice bowl and underplate are reproductions made by one of the silver companies in Hanau, Germany. There was a major industry in recreating antique silver that grew up around Hanau in the late 1800s and up through the first several decades of the 1900s that eventually included a very large number of companies in making reproduction silver. Some of the things that are tip-offs for an object being from this large scale production include: too many 'hallmarks' that do not quite make sense and that are a little bit different or a little bit less distinct that real hallmarks; elaborate repousee designs that often include either cherubs or pastoral scenes; and lattice work (reticulation).

Hanau silver can be very nicely done, and for people who are attracted to the elaborate styles it can make a wonderful and relatively affordable area to collect with many examples on the market from which to choose, especially when compared to the originals. smile

Cheryl is correct - Georg Roth & Co. of Hanau - and Kimo's remarks are spot on, too. I should mention that my research shows that there were two companies which used nearly identical crowned A/P/Fleur-de-lys marks. Roth was one of these (and it is definitely their marks which are illustrated here) but the other I have not yet been able to identify.
