Hi.

I've been trying to identify the markings on a tea service. it has the British sterling lion on the right, the capital letter E in the middle and an anchor on the left. the Birmingham anchor I've seen online is vertical, this one is on its side (with the hooks on the left). And the border on the "E" is different than what I've seen for the Birmingham dates as well.

Any ideas?

I can't get a pic b/c my camera isn't very good. I would like to know because I'm curious about how old it is. I know it was my great-great-grandparents' but beyond that, i would like to know.

I did a search for "anchor" on this site and found a pic of the same sideways anchor and they said it was Birmingham. My next issue is with the date letter, it's a regular capital E but the background on the letter is different than the ones on the tables i've seen. It looks almost like a maple leaf as the background. I will try to get a picture or at least a good drawing.

The markings do look a lot like those in the top picture on that link. However, the right hand mark is the sterling mark (looks like the British one) and the anchor is slightly different (but the same orientation).

Do you have a link or a better reference for the JE Ellis Co. ?

Here is a

Thanks for all of the help!

This matches exactly the drawing of the trademark of J.E.Ellis & Co. of Toronto, as shown in Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers. The letter E is on a maple leaf, which is a Canadian symbol.

Ellis emigrated from England in 1848 and entered into business in 1852. The firm operated under this name from 1877 to 1901, when it was sold.
