[26-1864]

Two pieces in the collection are souvenir spoons of the cathedral at Trondheim.

Wondering if this is St. Olav or King Haakon VII? Haakon's coronation was in 1906, and these may have been commemorative of his crowning?

Closeup of the bowl: (for the record, these were solid black before I cleaned them, so sorry for the condition)

No question about the shop where they were made & I know Odin Domaas is still around in Trondheim. Any other information about this maker would be appreciated!

Again, thank you all for letting me share!

Very nice, I collect Scandinavian souvenir spoons and this one is fairly uncommon. It represents Saint/King Olav (Olaf), his tomb is at the Trondheim Cathedral. There were spoons made for the coronation of Haakon VII, usually with an "H VII" somewhere in the design. The city name was changed to "Trondheim" in 1931, so yours probably dates before that, with the "Trondhjem" spelling.

Elisabeth,

Nice pair of spoons and a lot of history when you search for data etc. it goes back to 1030. A lot of your silver has a relation with believe. I think Norway and perhaps more Scandinavian countries made a lot of silver ware in combination with religion. The reactions from you and others learned me more about it and I'm thankful for that. I've for instance a twisted spoon made by Marius Hammer and at the end is a thin plate connected (square)with a pointed engraved cross motif. Your spoons are made with a lot of details and nice done.

But I think that each piece you have is interesting for to see.
I've checked Trondheim and it is also a harbor city, I begin to believe that you grandfather has seen nearly all the harbor cities of Norway. I have to check the other names from your other pieces you showed in your other topics. My interest is still growing and perhaps other harbor city names are also mentioned at the other silver pieces?

I've cleaned my Norwegian silver in a plastic tub, at the bottom put tin foil, placed the silver above and between the silver also tin foil crams, fill the tub with warm water and put soda in it. After the warm water is cooled off, wash the silver with distilled water (or use some Aquavit from Hose_DK)and dry them.

It helped me a lot. Like the photo is showing, also with twisted stele silver!

Perhaps you already knew this method but it is a try from this side.

Silverhunter - there used to be a product made "on this side" that was called Spic-n-Span. The process for cleaning that you described was used with it instead of soda & it worked beautifully, but sometimes too well, spoiling the nice patina in a design. I've used the soda method, but not with the results you've depicted. Perhaps I will try again with select pieces. Of course since these are family heirlooms, I won't do anything that might harm them.

I have many more pieces I haven't posted... tomorrow there comes vegetable tongs!

And I, too, was leaning toward St. Olav - given the age & the sword, but the mustache was throwing me off. I haven't seen any pictures of him with a mustache.

Elisabeth,

I try the mark you mentioned, if they sell it over here. The soda and tin foil solution helped me a lot with removing the black filter what was formed around the pieces in time. I used boiled water. I can understand that you are also carefull with this special herited family pieces with emotional value and what is more important than the alloy or the silver price of it.
I also agree that you don't must clean it totaly, black rests of dirt in grooves will give expression with a piece ( a more 3-D look, I always say). So handle your silver with care, it took me a week to clean my Norwegian silver totaly and it is not my favourite hobby "cleaning". But it is necesarry I suppose!

Bascall I don't know if this is Haakon the .. but I prefer the look of the one with the swoard, the Haakon with ax is a very aggresif expression. But it has two functions around a neck or as broche.
But similar object and good to have.

The backplate says:

Cop pilegrimsmerke
fra Nidaros ca 1250

The loop for the chain has 925S and H K.

I've only gotten as far as noting a Trondheim connection to Nidaros.

Silverhunter, your interpretation sounds correct to me, interesting, thank you. He is a gruesome looking character.

Bascall, the most pelgrims signs were made out of tin/pewter and were used in many european countries in the middle ages and stil nowadays. But you already knew that, I suppose. Religion groups walk/ed a pelgrims route and get/got the pelgrims sign for ending the route. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Compostella etc.

Silverhunter, that too is interesting. I don't know enough about the subject to find fault in anything you have said. It makes perfect sense to me. I've read somewhere that a shell was worn by early pilgrims to the Holy Land to signify their visit.

That was probably known by some, but not by me. So thank you. It makes my broach and the other Trondheim items that much more important.

The translation was great.

And I saw today that my husband's grandfather - Vilhelm - and his grandmother - Kristin - were both born in Trondheim, so it would make sense that they would travel back there after they married & moved to Oslo.
