[26-1929]

Hi -
I have a cigarette case in gold 585/1000 = 14 carat in the typical Russian/Baltic "sunburst" design. It was bought just after the collapse of the Soviet Union in Klaipeda (Lithuania) from a person who told me that this case belonged to her father - so I estimate he bought it 1920-1930.

The case:

The mark with maker LB:

The only mark which could fit is the town mark from Goldingen (now Kuldiga) in Latvia - although used much earlier.

From where (country) is the case and who (LB) made it when?
Any help welcome!

Hello Postnikov!

I know almost nothing about Russian Gold, but I thought that 583 not 585 was the numerical mark for Russian 14k gold?

Hi jersey -

according to the marks, this cigarette case is not Russian. 585/1000 is the international (western)standard for 14 carats. The Imperial Russian standard was 56 Zolotniki = 583.33/1000. In 1954 the Soviet Union adapted to Western/international standards.

Hello again !

Thank you for your clarification on the marks.
That may explain why in trying to do a search I kept coming up with English makers.
I will continue my search for you to see if I come up with something.
P.S. I enjoy your posts!
