HI,

I am delighted to have found this forum. I love silver objects. I have bought several of them in the past mainly in charity shops here in Las Palmas (Spain-Canary Islands).

Yesterday I bought a nice little hollow one, (probably a sweet tray) with 2 hallmarks on it. One is a 5 points star, and the other is difficult to recognize. I have seen this star in other objects, sometimes with an "s" inside. Does it mean it is a silver sterling piece?

Thank you,

juansi

I have seen in my mother's house the same star accompanied by another mark in a pentagon in several objects that appear to be silver. Probably they could be Spanish hallmarks, but I will have to check it.

I have consulted a jeweller who has told me he thought it could be silver because the object is very ductile, flexible, in fact it has some breakages here and there in the bending lines

The star is the modern Spanish Hallmark. The other mark could be the makers mark. I don't know when this mark started being used, but I believe it's in Tardy.

Thanks vathek.

Only one question, what is Tardy?

As I said I have seen the star in some objects, probably Spanish, but also in others that I have, having the star an "s" inside and accompanied with Chinese characters.

Tardy's International Hallmarks on Silver is a must have reference for anyone seriously interested in international silver. It is published in both English and French.
