[01-1300]

This weekend June and I managed to get a 1927 Christofle catalogue No. 4.

Our ability with French is almost non-existent. It would be a great help if some one of the forum member/linguists would be kind enough to translate. Speaking of forum members who speak/read French, whatever happened to Doobees (aka Sunsan)? Last thing I remember was she was going on 6 week vacation and that was months ago.

Here goes:

In order that our clients avoid all confusion, we give below examples of our factory marks for the Small Silverware (?flatware).
These marks are a guarantee of perfect manufacture and the application (or plating)of silver announced in our catalogues.

(Top row, left to right)
Table covers
Cadet table covers
Dessert covers
Coffee spoons, 15 (?centimetres)
All other pieces
(Bottom row)
Special mark for gilded silverware
Bar applied in addition to the mark on all our silverware
Special mark for extra-plated silverware

The property (i.e copyright) of all our models is reserved according to law.

Thank You.

The catalogue is mostly flatware and smalls. It includes interesting things like a Cuiller a absinthe. See the post about the Whatzit - Absinthe

Thanks again.

Interesting find. Just one small clarification to Patrick's translation. "Couverts" in the silverware context means not literally "covers" but rather "place settings" (or "flatware"). Each place setting is a couvert; the French would say "12 couverts" where we'd say "service for 12."

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the little numbers beneath the scales refer to the thickness of the plating, indicating square centimeters of surface per gram of pure silver.

I was indeed thinking of place settings when I translated "covers" - your term is much more appropriate, thanks.
My understanding of the numbers within the marks is that they refer to the number of grams of silver used for 12 place settings.

Thank you for the further clarification on couverts. "Covers" just wasn't doing anything for me. Couldn't figure out what that meant.

I picked up 36 pieces at an auction, that are Christofle, they have the Scales with a number in them (80 or 800) can't tell which, (too old and blind), so do I have 800 Contential or Plate...?

In an earlier post, some Christofle sterling marks are shown: Christofle plate or sterling?
From this, it appears that the scales symbol was used only for silverplate.

I would also expect Christofle solid silver to have the corresponding official French marks (ie the Minerva head)- although I suppose there is the possibility that items produced for sale outside France might carry the local marks?

I have heard, too, that Christofle had/has plants outside France - one currently in Brazil, and possibly Germany in the 19th century? So perhaps there are other variations in the marks.

Does anyone know if Christofle used 800 grade silver? I haven't seen it before, but this means nothing!

I just got a 16 power loop, the marks is a Balance with an "84" in it so I suppose it is plate...
