I need help identifying the maker of a pierced and slotted ladle.

One mark is a left facing rooster with the number "2" above the right foot all inside 2 vertical rectangles with clipped corners. This is a French 2nd standard mark of 1819. My source is pages 339 and 383(#5857) of Wyler's Book of Old Silver.

A second mark is a right facing man with mustache all inside a circle. This is a French guarantee mark of 1819. My source again is page 335, right column, 9th symbol from the top of the page of Wyler's Book of Old Silver.

The back of the handle has the word "LANTING" inside a rectangle.

Can anyone identify LANTING?

Finally, the back of the handle has the letters "JS" and a flur de lis centered above the JS, all inside a diamond.

Can anyone identify "JS" for me.

Thanks for your help.

Your marks sound right for French .800 standard silver dating from 1809-1819. As described, these are marks for the provinces (i.e., not Paris). If you can see a number on the head of the man, you'll be able to narrow down to the region, which might give you a handle on the maker JS. Don't know what LANTING might be. Unfortunately, there is no overall listing of the thousands of French silver makers and their marks. To complicate matters, during most of this time period France ruled Belgium and the Netherlands and controlled parts of Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Silver makers in these regions often used French style marks, adding to the numbers of makers. Check out the July 31 question by doc in the General Silver Forum for more about pierced work.

Thanks for your reply. The number on the man's head is 90% worn off and I can't tell exactly what number it is. I appreciate your help and suggestions. Luckydogs
