[01-1927]

A customer brought in two very large (18-22") tall figural epergnes (I think) - women figures as base with large low-rimmed bowl on
top - seem like Art Nouveau - perfect condition - very detailed - one woman seems to be fishing the other is holding a large flower - marks are

    CFBB Friedlander
then what looks like a bell shape 800
then a roofed house shape and the numbers 118-123 for one the other 118-122

Any clues about these?

Hi there,

All I can say is that they are German and likely to be period art nouveau.

"CFBB Friedlander" is most assuredly "GEBR. FRIEDLANDER" for Gebrüder Friedlander (Friedlander Brothers): an upscale silver manufacturer and retailer founded in Berlin in 1824 and Court Jewelers Princess Luise of Prussia from 1860. They were indeed retailers of fine Art Nouveau silver, and were known to have executed designs by the painter Wilhelm Lucas von Cranach (1861-1918).

One of the marks you see is almost certainly the German reichsmark for silver: a crown & crescent moon with the 800 being the fineness of 800/1000. The other mark is probably the actual manufacturer's mark. (Friedlander were primarily retailers in the 1900s, but the mark on their manufactured wares was a bird's wing, with the tip facing right.) Items designed by Cranach should bear his mark as well - a conjoined WLC, with the W looking like a crown or - perhaps - the pitch of a roof. It's a long shot, but well worth investigating further and/or at least posting a photo of the mark, as Cranach's designs are much sought after.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your help!

Do you suppose these are weighted with something other than silver?
I don't know about such things but am curious - they are kind of heavy!
