Would anyone gild sterling with dutch gold? I have a Victorian box with hallmarked container lids that match identically in color the brass hinges of the box. The date is 1877-78 and the surfaces of the lids are up to 3 inches in diameter. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm not familiar with "dutch gold", however, have you considered that the brass fittings of the box may have been (gold) gilded originally?
That could explain the similarity.

I had not considered that when I posted but it makes a lot of sense. I did read about gilded brass hinges after my post. I wonder if that is uncommon. Thanks so much for your input! Dutch gold (schlag) is an alloy of copper and brass.
