What a wonderful board. The search I did for information on the Christofle marks was simply invaluable. Many thanks to those folks.

I have a Christofle piece and was wondering if someone could help me identify it.

close-up of marks

Based on this thread Christofle scale mark it appears to be an early plate piece based on the scale mark-

"C" scale "C" (1844-1962?)

The other numbers are
Top: 57
On the left of the scale mark: 4
Above "Christofle": 975395

Hopefully I got that right. Real problem is I have no idea what type of item it is. Does anyone know what it is called and used for? Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Nice looking item! Is the lid hinged, or does it lift off completely? Is there an opening in the lid? Answers to these questions would help determine function of piece.

Right you are, sorry wink

The lid is indeed hinged to the handle and no, there is no spoon notch, it's a solid circle.

There are three lid supports (the metal bands that surround the glass) and one of couse has the handle attached.

Inside is the crystal bowl. It sits free and is easily removed. Has an extremely delicate edge, is weighted (weeble like) and shaved flat on the bottom.

Otherwise it stands 4 3/4" tall and the lid diameter is about 2 3/4"

Can't think of anything else really.

Despite the lack of a spoon notch, given the size of the glass insert, my vote would be for a mustard pot (moutardier). Why don't you contact Christofle through their website or by mail and get a definitive answer?
