I was looking at a list of the countries where visitors to the SSF come from. Mauritius was on the list. I didn't recognize the name so I looked it up.

Mauritius
Discovered by the Portuguese in 1505, Mauritius was subsequently held by the Dutch, French, and British before independence was attained in 1968. A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa's highest per capita incomes. Recent poor weather and declining sugar prices have slowed economic growth, leading to some protests over standards of living in the Creole community.

Since there was an Dutch/English/France connection I was wondering if there were ever local silversmiths, did they mark their silver and was there a local hallmarking standard?

Yes - Lots of French c.18th silversmiths -Mauritius was a Department of France so was treated just the same as any other part of the mainland - same rules and regulations for marking. (Punches sent out from Paris)
When the British arrive they keep the French laws (I think the only colony where they did this)but the marking becomes uncontrolled and typically colonial - there is much work to be done before anything can be published - it just requires a wealthy fanatic who wants to spend a lot of time in the sun - both in the South of France, where many of the records are and , of course, on the Island!!

I’d volunteer but I only have one of the qualifications... I am a fanatic .... I don’t speak/read French .... M-M-M, the south of France and island living— Sounds great!

Does anyone have any examples of Mauritius silver and the smiths marks?
